New research from NSW Seniors Card has revealed NSW seniors were more likely to try a new business if it offered a Seniors Card discount or deal.
The findings, from a survey of more than 35,000 seniors in NSW, also revealed 61 per cent of seniors wished more local businesses honoured the Seniors Card, with 70 per cent agreeing they would go back to a business if it offered a NSW Senior’s Card discount.
Eighty per cent of individuals over the age of 60 chose to spend their money locally and support businesses in their community and 72 per cent preferred the convenience of shopping locally.
Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said the research not only emphasised that seniors wanted more businesses to offer discounts, but also the substantial opportunities for small businesses to acquire new and loyal customers.
“The Seniors Card program was initiated by the NSW Government to better connect older people in the community, encourage social and physical activity, and help with the cost of living for older people,” Mrs Davies said.
“With around 7,000 new members signing up each month, it presents a unique opportunity for small businesses to connect with and cater to the over 60s market – one of the largest and fastest growing consumer groups in NSW.”
More than 5,700 businesses are registered under the program to offer discounts to 1.6 million NSW Seniors Card members.
“The NSW Seniors Card allows us to engage a loyal customer base who are not only well informed and engaged, but also actively promote our business to others through word-of-mouth,” said Erin Young, Chief Tea Officer at Zen Green Tea, an online business offering premium Japanese matcha green tea.
“The Seniors Card offers a unique range of tools, both free and for a small fee, to market to seniors through a variety of channels that have been really effective in helping me grow my business.”
In September and October, NSW Seniors Card is encouraging businesses across NSW to become involved in the program for their chance to win a $10,000 Seniors Card advertising package. Card holders are also invited to nominate businesses in their local area to join the program and go into the draw to win a VISA Gift Card.
